Fort Amherst

Fort Amherst, Britain’s largest Napoleonic Fortress, was constructed in 1756 at the southern end of the Brompton lines of defence to protect the southeastern approaches to Chatham Dockyard and the River Medway against a French invasion.

Highlights

• Learn more about 300 years of military history with an amazing network of underground passageways, historic buildings and gun emplacements
• Take a tour of the incredible tunnel defences
• Walk to the highest point of the Fort and enjoy the striking views over the River Medway and the towns of Chatham and Rochester
